2016 Holiday Gift Book Round Up

I don’t even really understand what tarot is and I want to own this. The cards are so beautiful. And the package is lovely. No surprise that the author has sold 50,000 copies of the cards before this HarperElixir’s edition.

The Wild Unknown Tarot Deck and Guidebook (Official Keepsake Box Set) (9780062466594) by Kim Krans. $39.99 hardcover boxed set. 11/8/2016 on sale.

The “nasty women” of history, literature, mythology & folklore finally get their due thanks to this artist and DreamWorks animator who turns the tables on today’s princess clichés.

Entertainment Weekly features an interview with Porath who comments on people’s surprise that a man is behind this book about women.

[They] assume that I must personally identify as a member of the gender. I don’t. I personally identify as another human being who is a big fan of women. We’re all descended from these geniuses, warrior women, and uncompromising badasses. [But] systematically that link has been cut off. It’s a shame. This should be everybody’s birthright. You should have a connection to that.”

Rejected Princesses (9780062405371) by Jason Porath. $26.99 hardcover. 10/25/16 on sale.

From a creative executive in story development at StarWars.com comes a “history” told through the propaganda used by the Empire to advocate strength and maintain fear, and by the Rebel Alliance to inspire hope and win support for the fight.  It’s a gorgeous package. No whistles and bells to show you on this yet because the images are embargoed till the movie lands. But this is another partnership with MinaLima, designers of the graphic props for the Harry Potter films as well as Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Like the Harry Potter books we did with them, this will include removable, facsimile reproductions of props and paper ephemera from the movie, as filmmaking secrets, film photography and artwork, and behind-the-scenes stories from cast and crew. Woot!

The Case of Beasts: Explore the Film Wizardry of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (9780062571373) by Mark Salisbury. $45.00 hardcover. 11/18/16 on sale.

Peternell is the chef at Chez Panisse. His Twelve Recipes was my favorite cookbook last year–beautifully designed and illustrated with a text that’s warm and intimate. It’s filled with advice and recipes I’ve come back to again and again. Can’t wait for this companion.

Twelve Recipes won the IACP Award and was a NYT and SF Chronicle bestseller. The NYTBR called it “the best beginner’s cookbook of the year, if not the decade.”

A Recipe for Cooking (9780062427861) by Cal Peternell. $29.99 hardcover. 10/25/16 on sale.

This says it all. Pages and pages of dogs showing you how to chill out…

I’m stuffing this in every stocking. So funny, so true…
