Fiction Short Take: Red Dog – Jason Miller

This is book two in a brawling, wise-cracking series for fans of TV’s Justified. (Book one was last year’s Down Don’t Bother Me.) Having solved a mystery in book one, ex-coal miner Slim decides he’s ready to go pro and starts Redneck Investigations. He picks up a case that starts as a search for a missing pit bull puppy and quickly unravels into an action-packed shaggy dog story involving white supremacists, meth dealers and a dog fighting ring—all served up with pacey humor and weirdness.

“Slim cracks wise, gives and takes beatings and insults, and gets just enough help to survive in this tale sure to please fans of light regional mysteries.”
Publishers Weekly

Red Dog is real-life, low down, and nasty, but it’s well written and humorous at times.  The ending was a surprise and neatly wrapped up with a bow. I enjoyed it very much. If you love True Detective, you’ll love this book.
