New Nonfiction: The Devil’s Chessboard – David Talbot

Many students of mid-twentieth century history will be familiar with Dulles brothers, significant players in Cold War. John Foster was Secretary of State under Eisenhower. Allen Dulles was the longest serving head of the CIA and called himself “the secretary of state of unfriendly countries.”

While their story has been told before, former editor-in-chief of Salon David Talbot has uncovered much new material. Among the bombshells: Allen Dulles’s connections to both Kennedy assassinations and his dominant role in the Warren Commission cover-up; his involvement in Nazi-controlled cartels and the secret ‘ratlines’ that allowed hundreds of prominent German war criminals to escape; the secret missions of his CIA, including the never-before-told story of the covert campaign to violently overthrow President Charles de Gaulle of France.

This is the stuff of a le Carre novel…all the more scary because it’s true.

“A frightening biography of power, manipulation, and outright treason…The story of Allen Dulles and the power elite that ran Washington, D.C., following World War II is the stuff of spy fiction…All engaged American citizens should read this book and have their eyes opened.”
Kirkus (starred review)

This aptly titled book portrays Allen Dulles as the dark prince of the Cold War who manipulated the media, deceived presidents, helped stir up coups… [and might] have been involved in Kennedy’s assassination. Readers who enjoy espionage’s dark history will have a tough time putting this book down.”

“Talbot’s writing is absolutely fearless.  From the opening chapter where he implicates Allen Dulles as possible engineer of JFK’s assassination to his burying of the reports of Nazi genocide (not once, mind you, but three separate times!), I was left breathless. The implications of this book are massive, and I’m still in the period of the Nuremberg trials! Talbot’s documentation of the shadowy reign of Allen and John Foster Dulles may well change the way we view America’s place in the world; past, present and future.”
